Ten Favorite Sounds

1. Waking up to birds singing outside my window.

2. Water...running water in a stream, the ocean

3. The sound of my kids playing together, lost in whatever they're doing .

4. Hearing my kids laugh in their sleep!

5. Beautiful harmony in a song...can make me teary or catch my breath.

6. The sound of a hummingbird flying around...love that big Bzzzzzzzzing! The first time I heard that I was looking out for a gigantic beetle...and I was scared! Now I know what it is and love to hear it!

7. Silence. I love when the house is quiet at night, or when I'm the first one up in the morning. Or when I'm driving in the car by myself.

8. Thunder! I love the powerful sound of thunder! Love the initial CRACK! and the sound of it rolling away through the hills around us.

9. The sound of my kids coming to greet me when I get home.

10. The sound of my husband's truck coming up the driveway when he gets home.

Some Dirt

The kids and I were talking the other day about how Daddy's 50th birthday is coming up this week. We got to talking about how he was born in 1959, and that reminded them that Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959. My daughter asked if Daddy was born before either of them became a state, so I went and looked it up on Google.

Lo and behold it turns out that Hawaii became a state on August 12th! Which means hubby was born when there were still 49 states!

I told the kids this, and my daughter, 10, ran to the kitchen window and yelled out to her Dad, who was in the back yard digging a trench for some pipe, that he was born before Hawaii became a state. "Mmmm," came his reply, with a smile. Then she says..."so you are older than some dirt!"  We laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes, and hubby and I both said that was probably the best line we'd ever heard!
