You can tell I have a little (glorious) time on my hands. I'm at the computer in the middle of the day! Took Winter and Shane to the park program and came home with Morgan. He just slipped off to his room a little while ago and I can hear him playing with his train set. I'm reading up on some of your blogs that I love, knitting the ribbing on Widdershins, when some fun things came to mind.
I was having trouble remembering the ribbing k2p1 because I'm so used to 2x2 and 1x1. Then I thought of my kids - and I say to myself "2 boys and 1 girl" as I go along. Knitting love right in. And I haven't forgotten since!
The vegetable garden is in full swing, as are the raspberries we inherited. We're picking broccoli, beets, basil, peas. The lettuce and spinach have been abundant and are just now starting to go by. One of my 'in the future' projects will be to tame the raspberries a bit so that we can get to the many more that are so far out of reach. We bought our property last year (actually it will be a year July 25th) and moved in in mid-August. I don't think the people we bought it from were much into gardening, but this year has been a year of wonderful surprises and discoveries, as I believe the people who built the place 35 years ago, and sold it to the people we bought it from 9 yrs ago, were gardeners. We were told that they used to sell raspberries, and I can believe it because there are tons of red raspberry bushes at the lower end of the property that have just taken over. Mmmmm!
Other discoveries...a huge, deliciously fragrant and healthy mock orange bush, a small rose bush that smells very Old English rosey, lots of foxglove volunteers all over the property, lily of the valley, deep purple siberian irises.
The other thing I was thinking about was our post office. I got an offer in the mail yesterday. I'm sure you've seen these too, from StampsDOTcom, where you can print out your own postage and save yourself a trip to the post office. Now for plenty of people I know this is really convenient and I'm not knocking it at all, because it's temptingly convenient. But, as soon as I thought about it, my next thought was...I don't want to stop going to the post office! Our post office is very small. It looks something like a storefront out of a Western movie (wish I had a pic). It has moss growing on the roof. The postmistress is so friendly and she knows us all by name. And she closes for an hour at lunchtime to take her lunch break. So, in this age of everything being made for our convenience, I'd really miss this small, very personal aspect of daily life here in the country!
And the last of my random sampling, I just finished a great book. It was called Comfort and Joy by Kristin Hannah. A romance, a great quick summer read, but not just boy meets girl and they live happily ever after. There came this point about three-quarters of the way through the book when something happened that made me say...What?! No way!...read read read can't put it down gotta find out the ending. It was really good. I'm a bit of a sucker for romances, because I like the happily ever after endings, but I like some meat to the storyline too, not just your average cheesy fluff romances. So anyway, this was a goody and I just happened upon it at the library when I was looking for other things.
Well, I'm off to play with my bubby who is now right beside me coloring with markers and crayons.
The weather is so much cooler and less humid today. Ahhhh! It's glorious! Hope it's like this wherever you are too.
